So why would anyone bother with a life repositioning at fifty plus???????
I love decade birthdays -30, 40, 50, 60….
I love them because they tend to throw people into a crisis regarding time ticking by and our general longevity. You may be one of those people who does life evaluation on a regular basis and has everything in place but if you are like most of us, you have been too busy making a living, caring for others and generally negotiating your way through a world that is increasingly hectic and challenging.
So congratulations, now is the time. If you have brushed up against the big 50 then you are faced with two undeniable truths: First, that people are generally living much longer than they used to, and second, that we do have a limited shelf-life. In short; you may live a long time so you better make it good and you don’t have forever to get on it.
“If I knew I was going to live this long, then I would have taken better care of myself” (Mickey Mantle)
This leads me to the questions of choice and responsibility. Now is the time when you can pretend you have neither and so just “get old” and hope for the best in an “it’s all downhill from here” way or you can rise to the challenge of living well.
Research indicates in order for life to be fulfilling, your proverbial ducks must be in a row in at least three key areas of your life. Relationships (the people in your life), physical health (nutrition, fitness/mobility and self-care) and meaning or purpose.
Living well means making a powerful choice. It is choosing to evaluate where you are at NOW and then to take responsibility to create a future that is one that you will not look back on with regret.
So over to you. It is exciting.
