Not Just for Lovers: Valentine’s Day 2020

Valentine’s Day plus one. I thought about what it meant to me yesterday, and I was over the moon with gratitude for the people who enrich my life. I did lunch and evening bubbly with my precious husband, but it went so much wider than that for me.

I recalled that, when I was a child, it was tradition to buy individual valentine cards and give them to our best friends. We took time to choose the cards and plan the recipients and hoped to get lots of cards in return.

At a certain age this stopped and became considered “silly”. When old enough to date, our affections were confined to a special someone. I have watched so many people find a partner and slowly let their friends take a back seat in their lives. Not a good move in my opinion.

I have become keenly aware of the web of people who I care about and who help to make me a better person. They support me, listen to me, challenge me, and help me grow. So, I sent Valentine wishes to my enthusiastic sports team, and to a group of women at my health club who have, over the years, become my precious social community.

Happy Valentines Day.
